We follow Jesus in a life of self-sacrifice. As verse 13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” In just a few hours, Jesus would do exactly that—lay down his life for his friends.
The life of a disciple, of every person being baptized today, is a declaration of this same commitment: to live a life of self-sacrifice, laying down our lives not just for friends, but even for enemies. All love is self-sacrificial, isn’t it?
