A Long Obedience In The Same Direction

Eugene Peterson described the Christian life “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” Peterson is championing the kind of life that stands in stark contrast to that of King Saul’s in the Bible. God used Saul to defend Israel, but this obedience was not “long” or “in the same direction.” Saul’s superficial knowledge of God, mostly just to the extent that it was useful for his political or military goals, was not able to stand up to the pressures of difficulty.
