In one of Shakespeare’s most famous monologues, the St. Crispin’s Day speech from Henry V, King Henry inspires his soldiers in the face of grim odds with a rousing speech about how the men who fight this battle with him will be forever united as a “band of brothers.” This is a king speaking to peasants, and yet he’s saying that what they’re about to go through will unite them all as brothers.
