It is a suicide mission that may not work and will cost all members aboard their lives. Ryland is terrified, which seems like a valid response. He has found his way to a comfortable existence; why should such a mission rest on his shoulders? He is, after all, just a normal guy. Like Ryland, we want to enjoy comfort, even when we may have the tools to do something about the issues facing our world.  For most of us, like Ryland, getting outside of our ambient zone takes force. Perhaps this is why Jesus was so abrupt in answering the would-be disciples from our study. He wasn’t giving them the easy answer. Maybe this is why Jesus decided to show Peter, John, and James both the glory and the suffering along the path to the cross.
