Researchers found that the brain uses two related processes: imitation, where we copy what we see someone do, and emulation, where we begin to understand their thinking and act with the same purpose “Watch and Learn: Study Shows How Brain Gains Knowledge through Observation,” Caltech, March 19, 2020, https://www.caltech.edu/about/news/watch-and-learn-study-shows-how-brain-gains-knowledge-through-observation). We learn by seeing and doing, then building on what we saw and doing it again. When Jesus washes his disciples’ feet, he isn’t just explaining what love looks like; he’s giving them a real-life example they can imitate and then emulate. They can go and do what he did: humble themselves and serve the needs of others. This is love. And they can also begin to think like him, asking, “What would love look like here if I were to love like Jesus? What would humble, sacrificial love that puts others first look like in this situation?” Communion asks us to remember what Jesus did, how he lived, what he showed his disciples, and what he desired for those who would one day follow him and take Communion together. It becomes more than remembrance; it becomes formation, shaping us into people who both reflect his actions and carry his heart.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0852/9874/1564/files/milad-fakurian-58Z17lnVS4U-unsplash.jpg?v=1778513769
