Who is the Author?

The author of the Acts of the Apostles is commonly believed to be the same as the author of the Gospel of Luke. Luke is thought to have completed Luke–Acts as a two-volume work commissioned by Theophilus. Some scholars believe that Theophilus (meaning “lover of God”) could have been a name used to refer to anyone that loved God, or even a pseudonym to protect someone’s anonymity (this would mean Theophilus is not Luke’s patron).¹ Luke is a gentile physician who was most likely well-educated, given his profession and his advanced command of the Greek language.² The authorship of Acts was ascribed to Luke as early as the second century by the early church fathers. The book also contains internal evidence that seems to point to Luke as the author, such as the “We” passages.3
