Who is the Author?

The origins of the book of Job are shrouded in mystery, and the book’s author (other than the possibility of Job himself) is considered anonymous. The book does not indicate precisely when or where the events it describes takes place,either.1 The identity of the author has, therefore, been lost in history. Based on the given material, it seems likely that it was written by an observer of the discussion between Job and his friends and was then handed down through the generations.2 The unknown author must have had detailed oral or written information from the time of Job, which he used under God’s inspiration to write the book as we now have it. There are also certain parts of the book that seem to be given by direct revelation from God (for example, 1:6—2:10).3
