Who is the Author?

The Hebrew name for this book literally translates as “Song of Songs,” an expression that means “The Greatest Song” (in the same way that “King of kings” means “the greatest king”). The Israelites regarded this book as the greatest wedding song, or series of songs, ever written.1 Some argue that the Song of Solomon, or the Song of Songs, was written by King Solomon. His name appears in the title verse as the author (1:1), and at five other different places throughout the song (1:5; 3:7; 9; 11;8:11–12). Solomon is even identified as the “bridegroom” (or “lover”) throughout the book.2 However, these references might mean that the book was dedicated to Solomon rather than penned by him.
