Who is the Author?
The epistle to Philemon was written by Paul the apostle. In the history of scholarship, some (namely, F. C. Baur) have doubted this, considering it to be a later invention of the church or of someone looking to use Paul’s name for their own purposes. But overall, scholarship considers this letter to be authentically Pauline.1 This epistle was also considered Pauline by the early skeptic Marcion.2
