This bishop has been kind to Valjean, who had just been released from prison and was desperate for food and care. When Valjean is caught red-handed with the bishop’s silver, he is brought before the bishop and expects to be condemned. He is, after all, guilty; he cannot escape the reality of his sin. But the bishop shocks him when he tells the police that Valjean hasn’t stolen the silver; it was a gift. He even gives Valjean a pair of silver candlesticks as well, claiming that he left the best of the set behind, and he tells Valjean to use the silver to “become an honest man.” Like the bishop in this story does for Valjean, and like Jesus does for the woman caught in adultery, Jesus does not stand against us but acts for us, raising us out of darkness by the power of his love.
