Who is the Author?

First and Second Chronicles are treated as one work in the Hebrew canon. The work was most likely produced by a single author, with the possibility of some slight redactions or elaborations by a later reviser.1 The author of the text remains anonymous throughout the composition. Jewish tradition assigns the work to Ezra the scribe, but no consensus exists within modern scholarship. The book of Chronicles shows great interest in, and demonstrates extensive knowledge of, temple practices and Levitical personnel. This may suggest that the “chronicler” was himself a priest or Levite who possessed both scribal training and access to the temple records.
